About Us
We offer a Comprehensive School Counseling (CSC) program aligned with the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) standards and the RI School Counseling Framework as identified below:
- Establish PK-12 protocols for communication and record sharing that will facilitate successful transition from grade to grade, school to school, district to district, placement, and high school to postsecondary opportunities.
- Establish structures by which every student is assigned a responsible adult, in addition to a school counselor (where applicable), who is knowledgeable about that student’s academic, career, and social and personal goals; and
- Establish protocols for the development, implementation, and student-based monitoring of Individual Learning Plans.
- Support each student in meeting the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) standards in the academic, career, and personal and social domains.
- Be a coordinated effort among the professional counseling staff and the rest of the educational community; and
- Include services to be provided to students at each developmental stage and specify how the services will be provided to all students.
The DCYF Alt Ed Program is a Limited LEA. All instruction is provided by certified teaching staff and is aligned to the common core standards of instruction in order to promote the progress of youth in accordance with proficiency-based requirements of their local LEA. Youth who are enrolled at DCYF Alt Ed have not voluntarily withdrawn and/or transferred from their previous school placement/LEA. As such, LEAs cannot disenroll or deactivate said students while they are in our care; subjecting youth who were previously enrolled to a brand-new enrollment process.
Per RIDE regulations, the LEA assigned to a youth when they are placed at the DCYF Alternative Education Program, remains the LEA throughout the “stay” of the youth and until they enroll with another LEA (as confirmed on eride) *see regulation below. As the responsible LEA, said districts will receive notice per a release of records that advises as to a date of placement for youth in our care. It is the responsibility of the LEA from that date, through notification of release, to record and maintain attendance and enrollment data for said youth in conjunction with RIDE/eride.
While a youth is in our care, we encourage the responsible LEA to maintain contact with our program to monitor said youth’s progress and to participate in placement, IEP, and other planning meetings; so as to support a successful transition for youth back to the LEA upon release. All LEAs are invited to a Transition Planning Meeting (TPM) when a youth prepares for release, and it is at this time that the LEA is also notified of any pending release for program and planning purposes.
